Tutorial: Troubleshooting Split Horizon Issues, Part 2

In my previous article on split horizon we looked at some of the problems with running a distance vector routing protocol like RIP or EIGRP over a frame relay hub and spoke topology. In this article we will be exploring the problems that split horizon might cause in an ethernet based topology. Specifically we will be looking at redistribution issues and some of the problems secondary addresses can cause….

Tutorial: Troubleshooting Split Horizon Issues, Part 1

I was reading through Troubleshooting IP Routing Protocols by Cisco Press and came across an example of when to disable Split Horizon on an interface. This particular example involved secondary interfaces, and RIP. After reading about it I tried to go through in my mind all the circumstances in which one might need to disable or troubleshoot split horizon. I labbed up a couple of these scenarios in Dynamips and came up with the following scenarios: Using Distance Vector Routing protocol with Hub and Spoke Frame Relay, Using Distance Vector Routing protocols with Ethernet topologies, Using a Distance Vector Routing protocol with secondary addresses and Redistribution issues with Split Horizon. It is these scenarios that we will be having a look at in the next couple of articles….

Ipcalc

This showed up in my rss feeds today: Calculating Subnets with “ipcalc”. Its a great little program you can run from a linux shell to do IP subnet calculations. Cool!

Blog: Merry Christmas!

I’ve decided to take a break from study for the next week and start up again after New Years. I want to spend as much time with my wife as possible during our break together and before she starts work in the New Year. And besides…its Cricket Season! Hopefully the break will allow the QoS [...]

Resources Section

I’ve added a Resources section to the site with links to Cisco Blogs and resources. Check it out here.

Dynamips Lab Workbook 2

Internetwork Expert has announced that they will be releasing part 2 of their popular Dynamips workbook. Workbook 2 will be released on January 15th 2008 and consist of labs 11-20 from the standard R&S Workbook Volume 2. This is great news for CCIE R&S candidates using Dynamips to prepare for the lab. Check it out [...]

My Top 6 Cisco Blogs of 2007

I was working on putting up a resources section and a blogroll on ardenpackeer.com today. I have a pretty big list of Cisco blogs that I subscribe to and check regularly. I will eventually put up all these links into a seperate section on the site, but in the mean time these sites are definitely my favourite and well worth checking out…

Blog: Sydney

Well I’m sitting in an internet cafe in Sydney at the moment. I’m up here for a week sitting in on a ec council course. That means I should have plenty of time to work through a couple of scenarios at night this week. I’m going to concentrate on QoS question interpretation and Multicast which [...]

Tutorial: How to use Cisco MQC & NBAR to filter websites like Youtube

I was asked a great question by one of my clients regarding filtering of websites. He had filtered youtube and google video at his proxy server but with the number of different video sites popping up (metacafe, jibjab etc etc), his filters just couldn’t keep up…and neither could his bandwidth!
One solution to this problem is [...]

Cisco opens up IOS

This showed up in my RSS feeds today: Cisco opens up IOS. Juniper and Cisco are both opening up their OS. From the article: Cisco will “dynamically link IOS services and move the software onto a Unix-based kernel”. IOS on Linux anyone?

New Lab Rental Process

Internetwork expert have a new Lab Rental Process. You now purchase tokens that can be redeemed for lab access. Check out the class on demand detailing it here: http://classroom.internetworkexpert.com/p16573653/

Tutorial: How to set up a Cisco router as a Web Server

Need a basic webserver? Did you know that little Cisco router in the corner can act as as one? Well, now you do! In this article we will be setting up a basic webserver on a cisco router. I will be using dynamips to demonstrate this, but it works just as well on a real router! I was using dynamips to simulate a QOS lab where i wanted to mark certain HTTP traffic for shaping. I needed a way to simulate a webserver so that I could test it. Enter the ip http server command!

New Permalink Structure

I’ve updated my Wordpress permalink structure and I noticed that google was indexing the old structure. Enter the Permalinks Migration Plugin for wordpress. It works great and fixes the permalink problem by using a 301 redirect. Excellent!

Troubleshooting: How to Get Interface Summaries in IOS

To quickly get a summary of interfaces and addressing information from IOS you could use one of the following:

interface FastEthernet0/0
ip address 10.1.1.1 255.255.255.0
interface BRI0/0
no ip address
interface Serial1/0
no ip address
interface Serial1/0.1 multipoint
ip address 172.31.1.1 255.255.255.0
interface Serial1/0.2 multipoint

Code Markup

I found a wordpress plugin that does exactly what I need. The Code Markup plugin allows me to paste in router configs in my posts without all the spacing etc getting screwed. Awesome!

Blog: CCIE Lab Booked

So I’ve booked my CCIE Lab. Having an actual lab date changes things. It focuses you because you have an end point. So far my life has been: get up, study for a couple of hours, go to work, study for a few more hours. I can’t remember what it was like not to study. I remember something vaguely about having a social life. Somthing about sunshine outside and laughing and joking with my friends. Carefree Arden. Don’t get me wrong I still go out and meet up with friends (My wife keeps me from going totally insane), but the CCIE is always in the back of my mind. Having a lab date means there is a possible end. The proverbial light at the end of the tunnel[...]

Posts Fixed

All the posts have been fixed up except for the BGP allow-as in post. Will have to look at that a bit more, as the spacing is a bit mangled.

Feeds Fixed

The RSS feeds have been fixed! I’m going through all the old posts and making sure that they look correct in the new theme.

Almost Done

Almost done tweaking the theme. It will evolve over time but I like the look of it now. I want to tweak the banner a bit, so i’ll have to photoshop up something. Still have to fix up the subscription options, and feedburner stuff so it doesn’t include these asides in the feed.
