Mock Lab 4 is the spawn of Satan! lol.

*sigh*. I know I stuffed that one up. I just finished it. Didn’t have much time to check anything. I got full connectivity, and answered almost everything. I think I got something fundamentally wrong in the IGP section. I got to the end, and i was utterly exhausted.

*Warning: Potential Spoliers Ahead*
- Requirement said use the minimum number of OSPF virtual links. I thought, well if i used different OSPF process ID’s and redistribute between them, I don’t need any! Pretty sure I missed whatever point they were trying to get at, but to me that is the minimum amount of virtual links. The whole IGP section was based on this, so I reckon I could majorly screw it up. I should have just gone with virtual links and taken the 4 point hit if I used to many. If the proctor was there I would clarify, but alas..

- Missed a requirement where you were only allowed to use one frame-relay map on a hub and spoke, without subinterfaces, PPPoFR or static routes…what the hell does that leave me? I know i stuffed that one up.

- Pretty sure I stuffed up WRED.

- Pretty sure I stuffed up Traffic filtering.

- Pretty sure I stuffed up NAT.

Everything else, I think I did okay, but I didn’t get enough time to check at the end so I don’t know. I’m getting burnt out, and my confidence has taken a little beating after that lab. I have to get rid of all these self doubts. The CCIE lab is approaching and all I wanna do is pass so I can stop tormenting myself with all this study! :).

I think I need to take a step back, but every time I take a break from studying, I feel guilty that I’m not studying! I need to build my confidence back up again before I have my next mock lab on Friday. I’m going to go through the rest of the Mock Labs I’ve done so far. I want to read up on BGP NLRI and two rate aggregate policing before Friday because I know they are on Mock Lab 7.

Time for a beer I think! I need one after that! lol.

Update: I got 61. That’s actually better than I thought I would, and around about where Internetwork Expert said I should be getting. Some of my assumptions were completly wrong (The OSPF Virtual Link question cost me around 20 marks because of all the other marks that relied on it). Proctor questions would have helped, but I really should have just gone with the basics and lost the potential 4 marks instead of 20 marks by chasing something I knew was a bit strange.

  1. Hi Arden, due to the difficult level of mocklab4, would you recommend that candidates give it a pass and rather attempt one of the level 7/8 mock labs? Or would you say its an eye opener.

The purpose of mocklabs to me is to determine readiness for the real lab, where my weaknesses are, where to pay more attention. Somehow I feel that this is lost in a level9/10 lab.

  2. @nortic: I would definitely say its an eye opener. Doing the harder mock labs I think they have helped me step my game up. It has helped push me that extra bit.

Like you, I also use them to find my weaknesses, and that is why I think the harder ones are almost mandatory. They really get you to look up the DocCD.

You WILL be faced with stuff you haven’t seen before in these mock labs (just like the real lab). The trick is not to panic, and just work your way through that. The harder mock labs put you in that same stressful situation that the lab will probably do. That alone is enough to recommend them!
