Well I’ve done lab 6 twice now and both times I learnt something new. First time through i finished the lab in just over 10 hours. Second time i did it 6 hours. The QoS and Security sections slowed me down the most first time through.
I couldn’t figure out how to turn on WRED Congestion avoidance for HTTP traffic without using a bandwidth statement. After looking through the DOCCD I discovered that if you use fair-queue on a class-default you can set WRED (random-detect command) there, so I had to match everything but HTTP traffic and the class-default effectively became my HTTP traffic. Screwed around for about an hour on that but lesson learnt!
Second time through I was being more thorough, and I was confident enough to play around a bit. When the question said something like “Do not use a prefix-list to accomplish this” I would do it without a prefix-list and then do it with one just for practice. I still need to read up on RMON a bit because i haven’t played much with it. Other than that I am liking this strategy. I feel like I am doing a lab more thoroughly this way. I think I will go onto lab 18 now and have a go at that a couple of times until I’ve squeezed every last learning opportunity from it.
One thing I did notice though, my confidence in certain areas is definitely improving. That lab was rated a 7 and other than the QOS problem and a security problem (Bloody dec-spanningtree…i managed to block every BUT DEC BPDU’s!) I was able to go through it pretty much unscathed. Onto Lab 18!
