I’ve been thinking about the way that I have been preparing for the lab, and I think I am going to change tactics. So far I have been working through the Internetwork Expert labs. Whenever I come up with a problem with a particular topic, I lab as much as I can on that one topic. I usually complete some of the exercises related to that topic from Workbook 1, and then watch the excellent class on demand videos. This has helped really solidify my knowledge in some of my key weak areas (QoS, Multicast). The problem I am having is that when I work though the labs in Workbook 1, I get really proficient in that topic area, but as I progress through Workbook 2 I notice my speed is still not up to where I think it should be on those topics.
My usual strategy is pretty simple. Work through layer 2 (Switching, Frame, PPP, etc) and make sure all that is okay. Work through layer 3 (IP routing, redistribution etc). Get BGP working. Work through security (Access-Lists etc). Then QoS and Multicast, and Management features last. I usually perform the first section up to redistribution fast. Thats where my experience is, and what I consider to be my strengths. That last bit: QoS, Multicast and Management features is when I slow down to a crawl and I am constantly looking up the DOC CD for this and that.
So this brings me to my new strategy. I have read on groupstudy that a lab difficulty rating of about 7 on the Internetworkexpert workbook 2 is about the same difficulty on average as the lab. There are 3 labs rated 7 in workbook 2: labs 6, 12 and 18. My plan is to do them over and over again working on my speed. I have the next 5 days where I have booked labs for 12 hours a day and I will be going through just those labs with the goal of working on my speed. Especially in my weak areas.
Oh and Happy New Year!
:)
